Okay. I'm planning on two entries on the state of TV today. The first one will discuss my viewing habits, primarily with what I watch...
Let's start off with...
Sunday: Simpsons. That's pretty much the only show that captures my attention on this night. Lately, I have seen a couple of episodes of Arrested Development, and I have to say that it's not bad. I don't think it's as funny as The Simpsons, but it'll do for rounding out the hour. The rest of the night, I have to hunt around for something to watch. Maybe I should just turn the blasted tube off and pick up another book.
Monday: The only two shows that I regularly watch are Everybody Loves Raymond and Two and a Half Men. I think that Men is very amusing indeed. Decent writing and the characters are somewhat believable for a sitcom. I've seen a handful of episodes for CSI: Miami. but I can't get past David Caruso. He's not that great of an actor, folks. Plus, I never thought that there was the chemistry between these people, not like there is on the original CSI.
Tuesday: NCIS, House MD. I really like NCIS. Good stories, and excellent character development. Mark Harmon plays a great hard-nosed team leader. Dr "Ducky" Mallard is a humorous medical examiner. Abby the Goth Lab Tech always provides a laugh or two. There's just great chemistry between everyone that's on the team. Then we get to House. Hugh Laurie (of Blackadder fame) plays a no-nonsense cynical diagnostician, trying to teach three young doctors the tricks of the trade, getting them to think about the mysterious illness of the week. He's sarcastic, hard-hitting, and doesn't take or give any bullshit... and I would love to have him as my doctor.
Wednesday: Dead night here, though lately I've put on the SciFi Channel and watched Proof Positive and Ghost Hunters. Both of these shows are ones that I wouldn't feel bad about missing. They're not bad, but they're not great, either. I've watched two episodes of CSI: NY, and have given up on it. The characters are just too cardboard. Oh, and it's on during potentially new episodes of Good Eats.
Thursday: Now we get to a rather full evening: Joey, CSI, ER. I do have one comment about Joey: it's not as good as Friends. Far from it, actually. It's too focused on Joey, and they keep his friends and family on the sidelines far too often. It has its moments though. CSI remains a favorite in our house. Interesting cases that can keep you guessing, plus I've liked learning the technical side of forensics. (If I were on one of these teams, I'd be begging to be placed in ballistics.) As for ER, I do admit that it's getting a bit old, but I've been watching it since the beginning, so I might as well see it jump the shark a few more times before it's over and done with.
Friday: Enterprise, JAG, Medical Investigation, Stargate SG1, Stargate: Atlantis, Monk. I know this seems like a lot, but there's a lot to watch on this night. Right now, the last three are in mid-season breaks. Enterprise is all right. They've gotten away from the original premise where not everything would work out properly and such, but it's still haflway decent SF writing. JAG has good writing and good characters, and I like the military aspect of a courtroom/law drama. Granted, you wouldn't see a JAG officer out in a combat zone or flying an F14D, but it's still fun to watch. Medical Investigation has a few similarities to House MD, mostly with trying to find the source and cure for the ailment-of-the-week, but the characters are a bit more wooden than those on House. I'm eagerly awaiting the return of the Stargate shows, which represent better SF adventure writing, and Monk, which is just all-around one of the best quirky characters on TV.
Saturday: Well, it's about this time of the week that I'll check the premium channels to see what the Saturday night movie will be. Sometimes it's a hit, most often it's a miss.
During the week, if there's nothing decent on at 10pm, I'll be watching reruns of Whose Line Is It Anyway? Sometimes I'll see what's on BBC America. Sometimes I'll consider doing the On-Demand thing, or popping a DVD in.
Never know.
More later, this time concerning the bottom of the barrel when it comes to TV.
