First day of Spring, my arse... but Happy Ostara anyway!
So, the weekend...
Friday was typical. Meatless dinner (pasta with pesto and cheesy garlic bread), since it's Lent. (I didn't mind not eating meat. The pasta was filling enough.) We watched the new Doctor Who episodes on SciFi Channel, and agreed that we would continue to watch the episodes. Colleen surprised me with the fact that she liked it. Now I want the local PBS stations to start showing the old ones again, starting wtih Tom Baker.
Saturday was a day of cleaning and working in the front room. Marcus went over to my parents' house for the afternoon while Colleen and I toiled in the front room. We figure that by Saturday, we can have enough stuff cleaned up and out that we can start moving furniture from one room to the other.
We stopped at That's Entertainment before going to my parents' for dinner. I found out that the box of stuff I sold to them (old RPGs and a few PlayStation games) came to $90 in store credit! Wow! Too bad my RPG order didn't come in (GURPS Banestorm and the 4e GM's Screen).
We had Cincinnati Chili for dinner, and then just relaxed at home.
Sunday was the highlight of the weekend. We took a drive out to Amherst and Northampton. We hadn't been out there since before Marcus was born. A lot has changed, that's for sure.
We started off with lunch at Panda East. Colleen got a spring roll and beef with scallions. Me, I decided to be adventurous. I got my usual gyoza, but the main course was maguro nagiri (tuna sushi) and kappa maki (cucumber roll). I'll start with the rolls. Tasty, but while chewing, I thought that the nori wrapper was a little on the strong side. If I make my own maki, I may break with tradition and forgo the nori, unless there's nori out there that doesn't have a strong flavor.
Now, opinions on the raw tuna -- I like it. If you put what you're chewing out of your mind and just let it mingle, everything's good. I didn't do the wasabi or pickled ginger -- I wanted it to be pure. I did use soy sauce though (I would have rather done tamari or ponzu than the regular or lite soy). It's not something I would eat every day, but I tried it, I like it, and I would consider doing it again. Just not so soon, though. Stomach didn't disagree with me, so it was good stuff.
After lunch, we walked along the main drag of Amherst. We checked out a toy shop and bought Marcus a new soft bunny toy -- it's a bunny head attached to a soft towel-like body. He has three of these things already, and he enjoys them. Guess it's like a cross between a teddy bear and a blankie.
We checked a few of the other storefronts out, then took a drive through the UMass campus.
I then pointed the car north on 116 to Sunderland, and checked out
phoenix_games. Small store, not a lot of merchandise, per se (didn't notice a lot of D&D 3.5e stuff, but there were people standing in front of some of the shelves), and once more than a handful of other people showed up (in SCA kit, mind you), it felt very cramped. C and I bought some dice (she got a pair of blank d20s to use for her classroom, and I found a set of copper/steel colored dice (which will go well with the blue/steel dice I picked up at TE on Saturday).
When that was over and done with, we hit the Target out there, as we had forgotten to pack a bottle for Marcus. Once that was purchased, we pointed west and went to Northampton.
We did some walking around, but it was getting late in the day, so we just decided to start heading back. We did some shopping at the Whole Foods in Hadley, and picked up slices of pizza from Antonio's to eat at home for dinner. (Colleen had tortellini and buffalo chicken pizzas; I had chicken and tortellini, and a slice that was macaroni, cheese, hamburger and sour cream. Yum.)
That evening we relaxed while watching The Sopranos (as well as becoming somewhat confused at times).
And now it's Monday.
Got a couple more entries coming up, including a possible new line.
