BRAC has overturned the suggestions of the military, and have voted to keep the submarine base at New London CT and the Portsmouth Shipyard in Kittery ME open for business.

No word on Otis as of yet though... if they shut that down, there goes a primary line of airborne defense.

Well thank gods they decided to keep New London open.

I don't know how I feel about this...

On one hand, it seems pretty bad to shut down the bases, but on the other hand, with our army being quicker/lighter/better, do we need to maintain the overhead on so many facilities.

I don't know if we really need so many bases, because our enemies (right now) don't attack conventionally. Conversely, who knows if in the future a foreign power would actually attack us.

Interesting article in Playboy this month about the fact that most modern nations will no longer engage in war, as it will screw up their supply chains.

I wonder if they will keep the Early Warning Radar at Otis if they shut down the rest of the base?
