Well, here goes:

Friday, 21 January
Had an interesting event at work. Got a call from a customer who said that the channel labels on his remote control unit had been replaced with a bunch of profanity. Now, two little lights should have gone off in my head: 1) The voice sounded familiar somehow; 2) there were no lights on the phone signaling an incoming call from the outside. Those two items should have tipped me off. But no, the professional me had gone completely into automatic to try and find out what had been going on. I even told him that someone at his station must have been playing a practical joke on him. He asked me if anyone ever did that here. I said no. He then asked if we were all serious here. I said no, there’s a bit of levity from time to time. Well as it turned out, it was the president of our little company here having me on. I was the victim of a practical joke from the bossman himself. I had a good laugh at that, and so did [livejournal.com profile] silvara77 and my parents.
Speaking of them, we all went out for my birthday dinner a couple of nights early. We went to the Horseshoe Pub in Hudson, where I had a really good burger and a very tasty draft root beer.
Dad also told me that there’s going to be an RPG based on Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden series. Cool.
The rest of the night was passed peacefully, watching Monk on TV, while the VCR would tape the Friday Night lineup on Sci Fi Channel.

Saturday, 22 January
It had been decided by the two of us that we would get our running around done before the snow started falling. So we left the house around 1030. We first stopped at That’s Entertainment so I could knock a dent in my growing comic subscription pile. Then it was off to WalMart, where it seemed like everyone in the world and his uncle decided that they needed to do some shopping. No biggie, we did the quick in-and-out thing, getting primarily what we needed and then out. We had some time to kill before my haircut appointment, so it was a quick trip to Best Buy to see if I could find a spare HotSync cable for my Palm Pilot. No dice, but we did find three Eddie Izzard DVDs that we didn’t have, so we snagged them. I got my haircut, and then it was off to Blockbuster. Big mistake. The queue was beginning to wrap into the aisles. Plus, they didn’t have either of the movies we were going to get. So that idea was binned. Last stop: Price Chopper. Another mob, not only those getting the essentials, but those who were doing regular shopping were there as well. We were sort of a mix of both. We took it all in stride. Though I did hear one gentleman mutter, “This is crazy.” I agree. A threat of snow in the air (and lots of it, mind you), and people go into panic mode.
Now I can see braving the throngs of people at the market for food and such.
I can see people going to WalMart to get other essentials.
I can even see people lining up at the registers of your local package stores. After all, there was a big Patriots game on Sunday, plus a nip of brandy every now and again does give you the sensation of being warm.
But hordes of people at Blockbuster? Granted, you’re going to be stuck inside with not much to do… and people do have the need to be entertained. As long as the power stays on. What would these people do if it suddenly went dark? Can’t watch Dodgeball in the dark, can you? Time to light the candles and –gasp- maybe even break out a book… or maybe talk to the other people in the room.
And here's another thing: While I was getting my haircut, people were talking about how the filling stations were mobbed with people wanting to top off their tanks before snow hit. My question is: Why? You're going to fill up the gas tank so it can just sit there in your driveway. You're not going anywhere while the sky is falling. If you've got maybe a quarter of a tank, fine, you don't want the works to freeze up. But if you're just putting in a gallon or three just to have your car collect snow, why bother?
(Am I getting too ranty here?)
Good thing Price Chopper was the last stop, as I started to get a few stomach cramps and some nausea. I chalk it up to the large crowds.
We got home and pretty much just hunkered in for the rest of the weekend. I don’t recall what we watched that night.

Sunday 23 January
Happy Birthday to me!
Snow day, pretty much just holed up in the flat as the snow fell.
[livejournal.com profile] silvara77 got me some presents: all baby stuff with a Daddy theme and/or kitties on them. Stuff that both Marcus and I will get some use out of.
Mom and Dad got me some nice shirts to wear in these cold times, plus a copy of Going Postal by Terry Pratchett.
My present to myself will be ordered next week from Overstock.com. Just two or three D&D books.
So we spent the day watching the tape I did on Friday night, watched Candlepin Stars and Strikes, ate grilled cheese sammiches and soup for lunch, watched Parenthood, then one of the Eddie Izzard DVDs, and put the Patriots game on until it ended.
I made some rather nice and quick homemade chicken and dumplings for dinner, and a lovely chocolate satin pie for dessert.
We watched the premiere episode of Numb3rs on TV before bed.

Monday 24 January
[livejournal.com profile] silvara77 had a two-hour delay this morning. Rather typical with everyone else around here closing school.
I got in all right, after doing another hunt for windshield fluid, as I ran out again. Had to hit three different gas stations before I found a jug of it. Meantime, I cleaned the windshield at every one of them. Next time I get to WalMart, I'm buying three or four of those suckers so that we've got reserves in our cars. Besides, my car can hold more than a gallon of "Smurf Piss."

Nothing more to report.
Carry on.
