Make that sort of awake...

Saturday, it poured. Ivan's remains hit us rather hard. [livejournal.com profile] silvara77 went to the school to do her fair work, only to find out later on that she wouldn't be needed, as the outdoor activities for the afternoon had been cancelled. So, she joined me and the usual suspects for the Saturday afternoon gaming session.
Afterwards, we met up with my parents, went to the school, had a nice little dinner in their fair restaurant, and proceeded to the Pub Quiz, where we won by four points. Still don't know how we managed that, and my arse is still smarting from having to pull some answers out.

Sunday: Gaming again, different group. Although this one turned into a bit more of a social session at the end, primarily discussing the joys and woes of pregnancy and labor.
Then we get the call: one person dead, one seriously injured and one minor injury at the fair. One of the rides suffered a mechanical failure.
Here are the facts as we have them:

  • The ride in question, the Sizzler (which is the same thing as the Scrambler) had a chair cordoned off due to questionable safety or something. The ride handler wasn't putting anyone in the seat.

  • Two people from a nearby home for mentally retarded adults apparently snuck onto the ride and sat in said seat.

  • Said seat came apart and threw one of the riders onto the pavement, suffering massive head injuries and trauma. He was pronounced dead at UMass Medical Center. The second rider suffered major injuries, and is still in serious condition. A third rider suffered only very mior injuries, and did not go to hospital.

  • All the other rides, as of this morning, have been dismantled for transport. The Sizzler is still there, under investigation.

  • [livejournal.com profile] silvara77 still had to go in for school this morning. They're holding grief counseling for the students there today.

I've watched as many news reports on the incident as I can, just to see if I can come up with a clear picture on just what happened. Somehow though, we believe that there will be civil lawsuits coming up. Someone will try to sue the church and the ride company, even if it was the faulr of the two individuals.
Just don't know at times...

Interview this morning, then an afternoon of cleaning. I have another interview tomorrow afternoon.

More later as news warrants.

That blew my mind when I heard about it this AM. Man..........

We heard about it last night. My wife got a call from another member of the faculty between 530 and 600pm about it. It seems like we only heard part of the story then, and another part of it during the 10pm news...
[livejournal.com profile] silvara77 is at school today... no word on what's actually going on there as of yet. I'm sure I'll get the updates on it when she gets home tonight.
I just can't imagine what the kids and parents saw... I really can't. I've seen action movies galore with amazing special effects when it comes to wounds, and every epsiode of CSI, but I still can't imagine it. And truthfully, I don't want to.
The school has counselors there today... that doesn't surprise me. I wasn't surprised either when she got the call last night that school would still go on and that there was going to be a short faculty meeting before school about what happened, and what to say to the press should they ask the teachers anything.
Should they manage to get phone numbers of the faculty and staff and start calling here, I'm going to answer the phone in her place and say what I really think, especially if they continuously hound us for a comment.

Yeah

I caught the news on CNN last night. I was surprised about the church in Shrewsbury. Is that where Colleen teaches?

Re: Yeah

Yep, that's the one. Thank the Gods Above that we weren't there Sunday. I don't know how Colleen would have coped with seeing that, let alone being there.
Hell, I'm not sure how I would have coped.
For a while, whenever I go into that parking lot, especially at the spot where the ride was, I'll probably get this odd feeling... sort of like the one I got in Manassas VA, at the gas station where the Sniper struck.

Re: Yeah

Now you can say gaming saved you life, or at least your sanity.
