Okay...
For those of you who didn't already know, I live in Worcester and work in Dudley. The most expeditious route for me to get to work is to take 290W to 395S, and get off at exit 2 or sometimes exit 1.
Normally, I get onto 290W at the Central Street onramp.
Well, starting on 12 April (while we're out of town), they'll be closing several onramps in the central part of the city, including the one I usually use. This is going to cause major headaches for those who use 290 (either east or westbound) and get on it in the city. I hear the reasons are for repairs, so who knows how long this project is going to take. They've had the section of 290 between Hope Ave and the exit for the 'Pike divvied up and such for well over a year now, and no real work has been done on it for quite some time.
Now, there is another convenient (sort of) bit of access to 290W for me: Burncoat Street. However, they've been working on the Burncoat Street bridge over 290 for about a year or so, and it's single-lane in each direction. Anyone who wants to turn left and can't due to traffic holds up everyone else behind him, making for a longer time getting through that intersection. Sometimes, you're lucky if two cars can get through a light. So, I'd rather avoid that one at all costs.
Alternatives? Few and far between. I could try the onramp off of Belmont Street, but I can't remember if that's one of the ones that's being closed. I could drive all the way to Auburn on Southbridge Street, but that makes for a far longer commute time-wise, and I get up early enough as it is. Any earlier, and I'm a real grump the whole day.
All in all, there's just no real good way for me to get to 290W without hassle. Well, maybe one way, but I'll have to experiment with it. In the meantime, driving in Worcester is going to get a whole lot worse than it already is...

One day until I'm technically on vacation...
Two days and a wakeup before we leave...
Three and a wakeup before the flight...

Check out the Womag article on the construction. The city and the state will have concurrent projects running around the city. I think the city is renovating Kelly Square at the same time as the states working on that section of 290...

Whee!!

Actually, I remember this article from last year.
My comments were mostly directed toward the map I happened to glance at one morning in the Telegram (and susequently looked at on their site in a nice colorful PDF).
If they renovate Killer Square, that will make the headaches caused by just the onramp work seem like a minor sting... then again, if they make it easier to get through without needing to be an expert at Dodge-Ems, then I think Worcester will lose a little of its flavor. *ahem*

Why can't the DPW finish something before moving on to something else? That's one of the questions I'll have at the Gates to the Afterlife...
