So Dad came back over this morning so we could continue our work on the washer.
We took the cabinet front off so we could access the motor under the tub. We unhooked the pump, removed the motor, and saw this:

That's not what it's supposed to look like. Here's what the new one looks like:

See the difference? The old one has not only a well-worn rubber disc, but one of the plastic discs (the one on the gearbox end) had its teeth broken off! No wonder we weren't getting any spin!
So as of about noon on Saturday 18 August 2007, we once again have a functional washer. Yay us!
Now I'm going to be compiling a list for two very important lists a household should never be without -- a well-stocked everyday toolkit, and a decent first-aid kit. (Not that we needed the latter at all, it's just a great idea to have around.
